Before Anesthesia

If you are having intravenous anesthesia, there are some general guidelines and recommendations that need to be followed on the day of your surgery. Compliance with these guidelines allows for a more safe and comfortable surgery. Our staff will discuss these with you over the phone prior to your surgery. We will also verify and review this list with you on the day of your surgery.

  • Do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight prior to your surgery.
  • Do not smoke for at least 12 hours prior to surgery. If you can reduce your smoking or quit entirely, that would be preferable.
  • You will need to be accompanied to your appointment by a responsible adult. He or she will remain in the office during the surgery, and then will safely drive you home.
  • You should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours after having anesthesia or while taking prescription narcotic pain medications.
  • Please wear low-heeled shoes and loose fitting, comfortable clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures will be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you are feeling ill on the day of your appointment (e.g. cough, cold, sore throat, upset stomach, etc), please notify our office as soon as possible. We will likely post-pone the surgery to a time when you are feeling well.
  • If you routinely take medications by mouth in the morning, you will likely be able to take these medications with a small sip of water on the morning of your surgery. However, this will be reviewed by your surgeon prior to your surgery as there are some exceptions.
